Bachelor Duales Studium Food Management

The dual degree programme prepares you very comprehensively for jobs in the catering industry. But gastronomy is a broad field: it exists in restaurants, hotels, company buildings, swimming pools, on ships, on trains and even on planes. Accordingly, you will come into contact with various industries. Your positions can also be very different - you can work directly in the kitchen and service or more in the conceptual area. In the hospitality industry, you also have comparatively fast chances of promotion after completing your dual degree programme - if you perform very well. Knowledge of foreign languages is not a prerequisite for the dual degree programme in Food Management at IU. How important foreign language skills will be for jobs in gastronomy after the dual degree programme depends only on which positions you are interested in. In internationally active companies, foreign languages can, of course, be very important. However, they are not a prerequisite for finding a job after or during your studies.

Special cooking skills are not necessary for the dual degree programme in Food Management because it does not prepare you to work as a chef but for management activities. Of course, you should have an enthusiasm for culinary arts and food. It also doesn't hurt if you have more experience in the kitchen than just preparing pasta with ketchup. But your cooking skills do not determine your success at the university.

You will learn the profession from the ground up at your practice partner, which means that you will also work in the kitchen and service. On the other hand, you will also gain insights into merchandise management, organisation and management. In short: all facets of gastronomy are essential in the dual degree programme. With the practical and study experience you gain and your high level of commitment, you can gradually take on more responsibility in the company.

There is no specific prior knowledge that you necessarily need. However, as in any dual degree programme, the more prior knowledge you have of the catering industry, the better. Enthusiasm for culinary arts, an interest in nutrition and cooking, and concrete, practical experience, for example, through a temporary job in the restaurant business, will not only help you enormously in the dual degree programme but will also be an advantage when looking for a practice partner. However, your soft skills are even more important than your school grades - these include time flexibility, a high level of customer orientation, extroversion and a hands-on mentality.

As the dual degree programme prepares you for management activities in the catering industry, the proportion of business administration modules is relatively high. However, some of these are directly tailored to the catering industry. Business mathematics is not part of the dual degree programme Food Management at IU. Bei Vorlesungen und Seminaren besteht Anwesenheitspflicht. Diese wird über entsprechende Anwesenheitslisten festgehalten.
