Prof. Gissel Velarde

Dr. Gissel Velarde is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at IU. She earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from Aalborg University, Denmark. Velarde has experience developing and leading AI, machine learning and data science projects for classification, structural analysis, generation, forecasting, pattern discovery, and recommendation systems.

She was a research member in the European Commission's project "Learning to Create" and worked for Hansa Ltda, Miebach Gmbh, SONY Computer Science Laboratories, Moodagent A/S, and Vodafone GmbH.

Velarde received several awards as an engineer and computer scientist. In 2020, Velarde was named "Notable Woman" in the field of research by the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR). In 2019, 2020 & 2022, she was internationally selected as one of 120 technologists by the Top Women Tech Summit in Brussels. In 2021, she received a teaching award granted by Universidad Privada Boliviana for her lecture on Selected Topics in Artificial Intelligence. In 2022 and 2023, she received three Vodafone Star Awards for her contribution to AI strategies and the development of Detection Systems. In her recent book: "Artificial Era: Predictions, Problems, and Diversity in AI," she analyzes the impact of intelligent technologies on our society.

• 2023 Vodafone Star Award in the category: Experiment, learn fast. March 2023. The knowledge generated from development of a detection system to prevent fraud and mitigate risk was estimated to potentially save Vodafone a million Euros per year.
