Housing benefit during the dual study programme
Some students move away from home at the start of their first semester and look for a new place to live in the city where they are studying. It is not always easy for dual study students to find affordable accommodation in a good location and to cover the costs with their monthly income. Here we explain what opportunities you have in this case with regard to housing benefit during your dual study programme.
What exactly is housing benefit?
Housing benefit is financial support from the state for people on low incomes to reduce their rental costs or housing costs (for owners who live in their own home). It is intended to help reduce the financial burden of housing costs.
Do I get housing benefit as a dual student?
Whether you are entitled to housing benefit as a dual study student and how much you are entitled to depends on various factors. These include the number of household members, the total amount of income and the amount of rent or charges that qualify for support. To get an initial impression of whether you may be eligible, you can use the housing benefit calculator from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building. However, you will only receive a binding confirmation if you submit an official application for housing benefit to the local authority responsible for this. Normally, you cannot receive housing benefit if you are already receiving other benefits that already cover accommodation costs (such as BAföG).*

How to apply for housing benefit for your dual study programme
As already mentioned, you are only entitled to housing benefit during your dual study programme under certain conditions. You submit the necessary applications and forms to the local housing benefit office in your city. Please make sure you submit the application in good time, as the processing takes some time.
