What exactly is BAföG?

The abbreviation BAföG stands for the Federal Training Assistance Act. The law regulates the conditions under which the state offers financial support during training throughout Germany. Trainees in this sense are, for example, pupils, specialised pupils or students, but not apprentices. This financial support is also referred to as "BAföG". BAföG is therefore a sensible way to be financially secure during the dual study programme.

BAföG and dual study programme: Am I entitled to it?

During a dual study programme, students usually have a fixed income. However, the salary does not always cover expenses such as rent, food, books, internet and other costs. If parents are unable to provide financial support, students may find themselves in a tight financial situation.

In principle, anyone who does not have the financial means to support themselves during their studies can receive BAföG, provided the requirements are met. In principle, you can also receive BAföG for a dual study programme. However, the training allowance may be counted against this.

Students who live with their parents can receive a maximum of 633€. Students who no longer live with their parents can receive a maximum of 934€ (as of June 2023).

How do I apply for BAföG for my dual study programme?

Firstly, you should submit a written application to the relevant BAföG office. In most cases, the BAföG office is connected to the student union of the respective university and can be found in the same building.

It is also possible to fill out an application online at www.bafoeg-digital.de and send it electronically - an electronic signature (ID card with eID function) is required. But even without the eID function of the PA, online application is recommended, as the entries in the forms are automatically checked for plausibility and completeness and the documents can then be uploaded via the upload portal and sent to the Office for Educational Support.

You can obtain the application forms from any Office for Educational Support (Studierendenwerk or city/district) and online at www.bafoeg.bmbf.de.

You can find out what else you need to submit either on the relevant form or directly on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

In principle, it is worth submitting an application in order to establish any entitlement to Bafög during the dual study programme. Ultimately, the funding will be decided on an individual basis.
